On the second day of Elul
we go back to the ocean,
we teach the dog to swim.

In her umwelt, mercurial to us,
she might call it something
more akin to rescue—paws gearing, head

appearing over each wave
to retrieve us. Help
is on the way.

We find a stone
as round as boobs
and soft as kissed
by centuries of salt.

We crouch
before the waters.

Dear Universe,

we draft in sand
with the stone’s nose

We’re open.
Do with us what is needed.

You take that small planet
from my hand, kneel before
our pledge, revise:

Help us
Do
with us what is needed.
