the sun sets the tips of plane wings on fire & the flight
attendant asks what we'll have to drink & my son
responds to all questions with questions (meaning
poems) do you have alco-hole? because my Mama
likes alco-hole & there is laughter and no thanks
to the Bailey’s I would have loved in my coffee
had it been free & hole sounds exactly like whole
but is the opposite & aren't all of us a bit scooped
out in the middle & what is negative space made of
if not questions & marks and my daughter asks why
women have to be the ones who carry
babies & I tell her our bodies are made for bearing & she
doesn't understand so I explain we have the right
hole for this choice & life comes out & she asks if this
is the way life gets in too & I tell her yes & she doesn't ask
why we need to be filled or what inside of us
is missing & still I add because (I want
no mystery or metaphor here) I want her
to understand women are born
whole—so much life already written inside us
