It makes sense to spend extra
on a piece that can transform
from a serving station into the family pet.
It can follow you into the garden
and sprout tomatoes and delphiniums
from shuttered doors, can offer a hand spade
from an open drawer. Dot feels its fertility,
its potential to birth a thousand little
nightstands and stand serenely in the living
room where a cocktail party whirls around.
She considers bringing it to the bedroom
but can’t bear the way Bo lightly glosses
it with his fingertips each time he passes it in the hall.
